Worth knowing

  • The building’s historic windows can be drafty, though rooms remain comfortable overall.
  • The hotel lacks amenities like a pool and airport shuttle, and it is not pet-friendly.

About this property

Welcome to Celeste of St. Paul Hotel + Bar

Housed in a former convent, Celeste of St. Paul Hotel + Bar offers traditional rooms and suites that reflect a unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort. The building's old architecture, including original windows and creaking floors, creates an atmosphere that many guests describe as cozy and distinct from typical chain hotels. Some rooms feature fireplaces and balconies with views of the nearby Minnesota State Capitol, adding to the appeal for visitors interested in local landmarks.

The hotel provides practical amenities such as free Wi-Fi, free breakfast served in the beautifully repurposed chapel, air conditioning, and a fitness center. While parking is available nearby rather than on-site, guests appreciate the convenience of the location within St. Paul’s busy city center, close to cultural venues like the Science Museum of Minnesota and historic sites including the Cathedral of Saint Paul and the Minnesota State Capitol. The hotel also features an on-site bar offering a selection of drinks, often praised though noted to be somewhat pricey.

Guest reviews frequently highlight the attentive and accommodating staff, who assist with check-in and provide historical insights about the property. However, some note minor issues such as thin walls leading to audible noise from adjoining rooms and the absence of certain conveniences like an airport shuttle or pet-friendly options. The hotel’s ambiance tends to attract guests interested in history, architecture, and a quieter, more intimate stay in the heart of the city.

With a strong overall rating and positive feedback about its location and atmosphere, the Celeste of St. Paul Hotel + Bar suits travelers seeking a distinctive lodging experience steeped in local character. Its proximity to major attractions, combined with a calm and reflective setting, makes it a practical choice for visitors wanting to explore downtown St. Paul on foot.

My husband and I stayed at the Celeste of St.Paul last night. We had a minor nuance issue that led to Colleen and Carrie going out of their way to make our stay an exquisite experience! They are exemplary employees and my feeble words can't begin to express our gratitude for this experience. The room was incredibly beautiful, as was the rest of the building. We had a great night's sleep and also enjoyed our breakfast in the beautiful chapel! We will definitely be back. In the meantime, we will be singing their praises to everyone we know.

This review of the Celeste of St. Paul Hotel and Bar is long overdue; we stayed in August 2025. We were in town for a family event. We arrived rather early in the morning and Jericho was working the front desk. He graciously let us check in so we could get settled. We had a couple of room issues but nothing that could not be fixed. Carrie also was working the front desk; she carefully listened to our minor issues and immediately provided a solution. Carrie and Jericho should be given proper accolades as their customer service skills are top notch. Jericho gave us a document detailing the history of the hotel which I found fascinating and I loved the history! The pictures of the nuns in the hotel and room were so intriguing and added a perfect touch related to the history. I loved walking on the worn stairs and pictured the students and school staff there too. The breakfast was perfect to start our day. It was nice to end our day with a delicious drink in the bar, the bartenders who attended to us were very kind. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a cozy stay, and I suggest requesting rooms facing the Capital building. Thank you, Carrie and Jericho, for being so considerate and going out of your way to make our stay at the Celeste extremely pleasant!

I stayed here one night for a concert at the palace theater on a Saturday night. My friend and I walked to the palace and back and felt safe. Look up on the hotels website where they recommend to park. If you're prepared, it's easy enough. Interesting history to the hotel gave some charm to staying here vs any other cookie cutter hotel. Rooms were clean and the free breakfast was delicious. The food and drinks at the hotel bar/restaurant was delicious but a little pricey. We were prepared for that being in the city though. I'll definitely stay here again if I'm ever needing to be in the area.

We stayed in the Celestial king room with fireplace and balcony. The room was on the 6th floor with a GORGEOUS view of the state capitol. The room was cozy, very clean and updated. They even provided bathrobes. The bed was comfy. The only negative were the thin walls. You could hear the TV and noises next door during 1 night. The hotel itself was spotless and quiet with a "convent vibe". Most customers were older. The hot breakfast was yummy with good variety and the staff were friendly. Originally we were worried about parking. There are 2 parking spots out front for loading/unloading and checking in. If you are w/c bound, you need to go around the corner to the side entrance. Just a few feet down the road from this side door is the World Trade Center parking ramp with access to the St. Paul Sky Way system on the 3rd floor. Parking and paying was easy. No App needed. Just note, that every time you leave the ramp it restarts the meter. We parked our car for the entire 4 day stay and explored St. Paul by foot. The St. Paul cathedral, Capitol, Rice Rark, Landmark Center etc. are all within walking distance. And yes, we are in our 60s with some knee issues. If you don't want to walk, the bus and tram station are around the corner of the hotel front entrance. Overall we were very happy that we chose this unique hotel vs. a chain hotel.

Architecture nerds rejoice! The building is really cool and historic. The lobby and bar are especially nice. The windows are old and original so they're a little drafty but it never felt uncomfortable in the room. The beds are much more comfortable than i would have expected. It's a really nice hotel. The one star reviews are truly unhinged from my experience. Someone from san Francisco, of all places, complaining about how unsafe it felt. Homeless people do exist, in every city. I've never felt in danger walking around St. Paul at night and, frankly, the city seems to be doing better post-covid than a lot of other places. Much more life downtown than there ever used to be. Parking is super convenient, but not owned by the hotel. If you're staying more than one night it might behove you to "lose your ticket". Just saying. I really liked it here. Would stay again. Absolutely.

I love this Hotel. Use to be a convent. Old & Vintage. The rooms are very comfortable. Hot breakfast is included which is just OK. No parking but there is nearby parking. Lunch or Dinner has to be had at nearby restaurants. You have to take steps to get to the lobby. Staff is very friendly and accomodating. The hotel is great but it lacks conveniences.

We loved our 2-night stay here. The “confessional” room off the bar was delightful. Excellent cocktails to boot! Quirky photos abound, mostly of nuns (some cheeky). The elevator was slow and the floors creak in this charming old building. Take the stairs at least once and feel like you’ve time travelled back a hundred years, at least.
